I’m looking to buy a used car for around $3,000 in the next 2 months. So I have been looking on craigslist lately, but it is getting tiring trying to find a decent, clean example of an AW11 MR2 anywhere.
If nothing shows up, my back-up plan is a miata.
Then my plan C is to take the new car plunge and get either the Genesis 2.0T or the Toyobaru. I see the Genesis is a tad bit more expensive and 700 lbs heavier but it does have a turbo and more amenities. But the twins are a budget driving enthusiast’s dream with a warranty.
Anyone have any experience driving these two cars and comparing them?

The interior looks and feels really cheap on the base Genesis.
I looked at one a while back that smelled like straight up marijuana and backed out the second I took a look. Didn’t even need to go any further than that.

I’ve been in both a brz and a genesis coupe. Something about me likes the brz better. There’s nothing necessarily wrong with the genesis though.

Base model Gencoupe? No pass, unless it’s the R-Spec. Another serious question is do you live near windy, curvy roads? Or do you stay in wide open straight roads? BRZ/FRS will be BORING if you live in the latter.

Shoot for a supercharged BRZ and you won't regret it.

The Genesis is available with a sunroof, the twins are not :(
Too bad no more 2.0T Track (the R-spec fun shit and a sunroof)

Toyoburu. But I have no experience with the Genesis (just remember it is much easier to add power than to take off 700 lbs.)

Get a used toyobaru for the best deal. I know we should be pushing more new toyobarus, but if you can save 5+k go for it.

I’m looking at just the R-Spec. Since that is the only way I can get the Brembos and the Torsen. It’s too bad the Torsen does not come standard, it really should. But the R-spec comes with massive 19-inch wheels which is not going to do the handling department any favors.

Yeah, I’m digging for a 2014 2.0T R-spec model. They are still on the lots.

How can you afford the new car if your budget is $3000? Or do you have a solid income to make a car loan/lease payment with over the next few years?

Used GTI? Used Volvo R wagon? TDI wagon (brown, of course)?

86. Once you drive it you won’t want anything else. Also, 700 pounds?? That’s insane. There’s no way you won’t feel that. More weight needs more power, which means you’ll spend more on gas, tires, and brakes, especially with 19s.

Hold out for an A-Dub They’re out there, just hard to find. There’s a really clean one in my area for $3500 at the moment. As far a Genesis Vs Toyobaru, well, it depends on what you’re in to. The Toyobaru is definitely more of a sports car.

Then turbo the heck outta it

Yeah, but if they have better rubber, handling won’t suffer too much. If you are looking for handling only, BRZ no contest. But that engine is a slouch, not matter what anyone says.

isnt the genesis fwd? not sure if that matters to you, but it would make a big difference to me in choosing one over the other.
for 3k used youre going to be hard pressed to find something interesting thats not going require a bit of work.
got 5k? i’m thinking of moving on from my 1991 XJS.

Definitely RWD. I would never buy a fwd car. And 5k is a bit too high for me. Plus, an XJS isn’t really in the ballpark of what I’m going for.

Well $3,000 in down pay and then financing of course.

:( not very into the brown diesel wagon myself. I’m looking for more less is more, colin chapman philosophy kind of car. So even though I do understand the appeal of a brown diesel wagon for its utility, fuel economy and uh...brownness, it just ain’t fit for me.

Lightness in a modern car ain’t easy to find.

It doesn’t work like that. If your budget is $3000, that doesn’t mean you can afford a $30,000 car unless you have certainty that the other $27000+ interest is available on time.
I’ve just never seen someone cross shop a $3000 used car and a $30,000 new car.

So are brown diesel wagons, but we have to try!

It is not cross shopping though. It is plan C. Financing is another route that I can take if I have to. I’d rather not take on more debt so that is why my first and second choice would be one small lump sum that I have currently saved up for this exact purpose.
I am just debt averse, so that is why I’m looking for a $3,000 car.

Thats an insanely small car your propping up against 3 other cars. Are you sure you’ll be okay with a 12+yr old car vs cars that are only 2 to 3yrs old? I’d go for the newer cars and what deals they have.
The Hyundai Genesis may be heavier, but that’s what weight reduction is for.
And is possibly cheaper than trying to upgrade performance on a FR-S or BRZ.
Stage 1: spare tire removed, carbon fiber hood, lighter wheels, lighter car battery.
Stage 2: relocate car battery, A/C removal, carbon fiber trunk, remove back seats, install drilled/vented brake rotors
Stage 3: remove sound deadening, remove car audio, carbon fiber roof, replace side mirrors for lighter ones, replace headlight assembly for lighter one, remove passenger seat, install driver side racing seat, replace steering wheel
That should get you some good 1/4 times.

I wouldnt consider the MR2 that little and even if it is, thats what makes it great. A spitfire is truly little and I would love it if there was a modern version of that.
So far, I already dont like the fact that the frs is pushing 2800. Id reduce weight from there, not from 3500.

I went under the agenda your were making modifications. If you’re keeping it stock, then please disregard my comments. :P

I recently had this same dillema- FRS or Genesis 2.0T. My plan B was a Mini S. The FRS has (for all intents and purposes) no rear seats. They are there, but while seated in a normal position the rear seat bottom almost touches the back of the drivers’ seat when I sit inside. Me, my wife and my 2 teenage sons fit nicely in the Gen. The Gen has a LOT more power to make up for increased size and weight and it is a LOT quicker and has a faster top speed as well. I don’t know how moddable the FRS is, but I have been modding my Gen since day 1 and the turbo is a fun little toy to play with. The sound of the turbo (once a few mods let it speak) and the power make the 2.0T the way to go. I read that the FRS is a lot more lively and has a better suspension. That said, the Gen is no slouch and is a lot of fun to drive and it’s a lot of fun even when not driving and I work on it. If i lived ina mountainous area the FRS would make more sense, but on city streets power is more important than handling winding roads. I like power. If they come up with a turbo FRS, I’ll have to take a serious look at that car. But also, the FRS has some reliability issues with that boxer 4 engine. Look into that as well, it is a problem with that car. The Genesis Coupe has a better reliability record from what I have read online.

Actually, no. The FRS and GenCoupe get almost the same exact gas mileage. The GenCoupe is built up more, it is faster and is a physically bigger car with a much bigger back seat. The rest of the car compensates for the increased mass. Your statement would be right if the SAME car had the same mass, but it’s definitely not the same car.

the GenCoupe is RWD. 5 sec Google search tells you that.
